In the heart of the Mediterranean, on the sun-kissed island of Malta, three inseparable friends, Marija, Pawlu, and Isaac, were looking for adventure. Birgu, their hometown, was a lovely, historic place, but too quiet for fearless Marija, sporty Pawlu, and brainy, curious Isaac. It wasn’t always like this. When the Knights of St John arrived in Malta they didn’t stay in the dull old capital, Mdina, they preferred to be near their ships in Birgu, where the action was.
In Birgu, Bormla and l-Isla knights and battles weren't just stories, but history that Marija, Pawlu and Isaac could see around them, where our story begins.
One lazy afternoon, as the sun Pawlu had a thrilling idea. "Wouldn't it be amazing if we could time-travel, like in films, and live the history of Birgu ourselves?" Marija thought it was a joke, but before she could laugh, a sudden commotion erupted from the direction of the upper bastion.
The sounds of clashing metal and fierce shouts pierced the air, and as they ran closer, they couldn't believe their eyes. There, in the middle of a fierce battle, stood a figure they had only seen in paintings and heard of in stories - Jean de Valette, the legendary Grand Master of the Knights of Malta, sword in hand, leading his knights against a Turkish attack. The scene was surreal, the clash of swords, the cries of battle, was all too real to be a mere reenactment.
Without a second thought, Marija, Pawlu, and Isaac found themselves picking up fallen swords and joining the battle. They fought shoulder-to-shoulder with the knights, against the Turks who started to pour through the gap that they broke in the bastion, the breach or ‘il-Brexxja’ as the place came to be known. The battle was intense, and as they fought bravely alongside the soldiers, they realized that this was a moment that changed Maltese history.
