Choosing the shortcut, Marija, Pawlu, and Isaac navigated through a narrow, barely-lit passage until they came to a sally-port, a secret escape route to the seashore. There they found a man scrambling ashore, he was Toni Bajada, the hero of the sieges on Birgu and Senglea, who would swim between the two cities at night, passing important messages to the Knights and Maltese people, then swim back to continue his mission for another day. His bravery helped Malta win this war.
